Jaipur: A senior official from Rajasthan's Food Safety and Drug Control Commissionerate (FSDCC) is under investigation for allegedly misreporting spurious drug cases, resulting in significant underreporting between 2022 and 2024.
The issue came to light when Drug Controller-II, Raja Ram Sharma, reportedly classified a drug as “not spurious” if only one ingredient was missing, even when manufacturers admitted the omission. This approach has raised serious questions about the accuracy of drug safety data in the state.
As a result of this misclassification, only 36 spurious drugs were reported to the Union Health Ministry, whereas the actual number was 55. The FSDCC commissioner further revealed that Sharma attempted to alter official documentation prepared for the State Assembly, an act considered illegal and unacceptable. The misreported drugs reportedly included treatments for serious conditions such as heart and neurological diseases, potentially compromising patient safety and treatment efficacy.
Healthcare experts stress that this incident highlights the critical need for vigilance in reporting substandard and spurious drugs. Times of India reports that medical professionals are urged to be alert, report suspicious drugs promptly, and maintain close communication with regulatory authorities. Continuous awareness and adherence to drug quality standards are essential to prevent such discrepancies and ensure public safety.
The case has triggered a review of reporting practices across the state.
