    STAT+: Abridge CEO downplays impact of Epic’s new AI on call with customers

    Artificial intelligence company Abridge held a meeting with hospital customers on Thursday to address “confusion” about how it may be impacted by new AI products coming to Epic Systems’ widely used electronic health record software. 

    At its annual customer meeting last week, Epic announced that by early next year, it would release a Microsoft-powered AI feature to help doctors draft clinical notes. The product seems to directly compete with Abridge, which sells an AI scribe that’s used by nearly 200 health systems. 

    Abridge has raised over $700 million from investors at a $5 billion valuation on the back of this momentum. But Epic controls over 40% of the hospital EHR market, including many of Abridge’s most important customers, and it’s possible the EHR giant’s aggressive move into AI will take a chunk of the market.
