President Trump’s nominee to serve as the top lawyer for the Department of Health and Human Services previously attempted to ban methadone treatment while serving as a West Virginia state senator.
Mike Stuart, who Trump nominated in February to serve as HHS general counsel, co-sponsored legislation in 2024 that would have made it illegal to operate methadone clinics — a position on addiction issues that puts him far outside the mainstream.
